Your Story Is Also Our Story
I do believe that our individual stories, problems, solutions and successes does not belong to us alone. If we would decide to share what we are going through, it would not only heal us, but will help another, and also provide an opportunity for someone to offer a helping hand.
While problem shared may not always be problem solved, it provides avenue for a change of perspective. The advantage that comes with change of perspective is that when we change the way we look at things, the things we look at always change.
After my appearance on Sharing Life Issues with Geoff Q on Inspiration FM – Uyo, i was inundated with calls and requests from people seeking help in our society. One of such calls, among several others, came after my second appearance; the guy is someone who knew me from Childhood. He was amazed by my wealth of knowledge; how I was able to share life’s timeless principles, and with tears requested that i teach him how i did it.
It was a turning point for me.
I have worked with, and for great minds, through my working years. When my contract expired with the Oil firm i worked for, i told myself that it was time to do my own thing – i was done working for someone.
This idea of not getting another job was not received well by friends, family and loved ones.
My former company had transferred me from Akwa Ibom to Lagos with the assurance my contract will be extended. This transfer came with no pay, no transfer allowance, and nothing to support my accommodation. Everyone thought me a liar, especially when I are working for an Oil giant as ExxonMobil.
I had shutdown my private company (Geared Logistics Ltd) in Akwa Ibom as my staffs were yet to be on auto-pilot, sold the logistics vehicle, paused on my building project, and relocated to Lagos. I was housed in an hotel and evicted on my second Month, threatening a sack if i couldn’t get an accommodation. I was forced to get one and immediately traveled home to relocate my family and belongings to Lagos. I was going to find out about Schools for my kids in my neighborhood so i could bring them over the following Month when my boss called me to inform on my contract expiration.
The day i was dismissed (with colleagues that were transferred with me) – sum total of the money i had in my pocket and in the bank was N30,000. I was 42yrs at the time, living in Lekki (Lagos) where rents cost in Millions, driving a Mercedes Benz E-350, 3-lovely kids and a wonderful wife. My business was out, staffs dismissed, an unfinished apartment and an attractive CV with almost 9-years working experience. No savings as i had swept all of it to contain my issues so i could start again. It wasn’t easy.
I smiled home with confident. I am talented with multi-skills. Working wasn’t an issue for me because i am good and sound in execution. I must confess, I was not afraid. I took it for a feedback. But…
When the realities set in on me weeks later, it soon dawned on me that something serious was going on. I’d try everything i knew to establish my company in Lagos, operating from home. I did not know my way around Lagos and do not understand or speak the language – it was excruciating. I was spending the money i wasn’t making, hungry and somewhat hopeless.
The temptation of getting another job would not stop nagging me. I was afraid to pick my wife’s call and didn’t want to come back to Akwa Ibom. Establishing my business in Lagos was all i wanted. Plus the fact that i’d run my mouth to my wife and friend on how phenomenal my business will become in Lagos. I was too ashamed to come outside. I would dress with shorts and slippers, pack my car for weeks and didn’t want to make friends because i didn’t want anyone to discover what had happen to me. I was alone in the biggest City in Africa. Life had thrown me a punch below the belt.
Friends, it was crazy. I tried all i knew but nothing worked. I prayed and fasted yet nothing. I had prophesies from several Prophets telling unbelievable things, demanding for money, and all that had led to my issues – In fact, i saw it all. Just name it!
I eventually sold my car so i could gather some money to relocate, and the Prophet had the effrontery to ask me to pay Tithe on the money i sold the car (LOL). I arrived Uyo with N4,000 as all i had. Even my wife refused to collect the money from me. I was ashamed, i could not go out as i needed to gain some weight.
But, something remarkable happened while at Lagos. In the mist of that pain and lack, I encountered NLP with Innocent Minds, Initiated my MBA with Roehampton University, London, and grew myself through study while indoors. It turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me. For almost a year, I had grown in knowledge and skills more that I have done all my life hitherto. I came out phenomenal.
Upon arrival in Akwa Ibom, I did not have money, but i was by far a better person.
The most important of them all, I discovered my Purpose in life. I returned with intention to start out January 2018, but forced out by instinct to serve – today.
It is apparent that millions in our society have not the slightest conception of the causes of failure and success. Our schools teach practically everything except the principles individuals achievement. Young men and women are required to spend years acquiring abstract knowledge, but they wouldn’t teach them what to do with this knowledge after they get it.
